One of my favourite quotes about Pinterest is the following:
“Pinterest is not a social network – it’s a visual discovery tool”
It’s so true. Pinterest is a tool that really helps people discover and try new things in their lives. And one of the main ways to find this content is via search.
With the popularity of search engines like Google, we are used to searching for content through the use of keywords, but with the rise of many visual platforms, the development in visual search is something to pay attention to.
Pinterest has just announced that they will be focusing on optimising their visual search options in the next months and in this article I’d like to show you an overview of them:
In November 2015, Pinterest started experimenting with visual search, to help you “find all those things you don’t have the words for to describe.”
In the top-right corner of each image on Pinterest, a little magnifying glass icon was placed. When you click on it, you go to the Pinterest visual search tool to find related content to this Pin. You can search for the entire image, or select part of it. You can even filter the results by topic.
Visual search is also a great way to find related content to share in your own boards. You can search for images, but it also works surprisingly well on text.
Since 2015, it’s been a bit silent on the visual search front, but in the beginning of February 2017, the announcement of three (!) new visual search features showed what the Pinterest engineers have been working on behind the scenes for all this time:
When you notice something of interest on your home feed, you can tap the white circle that appears in the bottom right corner of the pin to immediately show related pins, or instant ideas as Pinterest calls them.
Because the images appear instantly, you’re reshaping your feed around whatever you find most interesting. This will make your feed even more personalized in the long run.
SHOP THE LOOK
Always wanted to track down and buy products you see inside fashion and home decor pins? With the new shop the look feature on Pinterest, this is now possible. Just tap the circle on the items to find styles you’re looking for.
When you are ready to buy, you can check out right on Pinterest. Some big brands will also be offering shoppable looks on the platform soon, so keep an eye out! We’re hoping that some big outdoor travel gear & clothing brands become a part of this new feature as well!
Sometimes you see something in the real world that you find interesting, but when you try to search for it online later, you don’t know how to find it. Pinterest might have the answer for you.
They developed a new experimental technology -called Lens– that, for the first time ever, is capable of seeing the world the way you do. It lets you use the camera in your Pinterest app to discover ideas inspired by objects you see around you.
Simply point the camera to a pair of shoes, or piece of furniture and tap to see related styles or ideas of what to pair this item with. Point it at a vegetable to see relevant recipes pop up. At the moment, this feature works best for home decor ideas, things to wear and food. But we’re hoping that when enough people use it, this might also become relevant to us travel industry people!
Instant Ideas is available for everyone worldwide already, while Shop the Look and Pinterest Lens will be rolling out in the US first. Plans are already in the works to bring these new visual discovery features to every corner of the world, so I’ll keep you posted when they do!
